The 2BS association, renowned for its commitment to sustainability certification for fuels and biomass, announces a new strategic voice. This initiative aims to adapt the guideline for 2BSvs certification to the specificities of waste management in France, with the partnership of the Fédération Nationale des Activités de la Dépollution et de l’Environnement (FNADE).
For over ten years, 2BS has supported virtuous agricultural approaches and developed technical know-how in partnership with experts from the agricultural world and the biofuels industry. Thanks to its simple, effective reference framework, recognized by the European Commission as part of the Renewable Energy Directive (RED II), 2BS has established itself as a key player in sustainability in the bioenergy sector. In 2024, the association celebrated a major milestone with the issue of its 1,000th sustainability certificate.
The new collaboration with FNADE marks an important step in adapting 2BSvs certification to the world of waste. Indeed, the 2BS guideline is already compatible with the RED II Directive for the use of waste in the biogas and biofuel sectors, subject to a few adjustments concerning landfill activities. The aim is to take into account all the specific technical and organizational features of the waste industry to optimize audit processes and facilitate their application, both for certification bodies and waste management operators.
FNADE represents the main players in waste management in France. Its 257 members include private companies, service providers, constructors, design offices and equipment manufacturers. With sales of 11.4 billion euros, these companies represent 44,536 employees in France. FNADE will contribute with its expertise to adapt 2BSvs certification requirements to the realities and challenges of the waste industry.
A step towards compliance with the Renewable Energy Directive
This partnership aims to provide the waste industry with the appropriate tools, within the European regulatory framework, to comply with the requirements of RED II. As the waste industry is already subject to very stringent traceability requirements, the aim is to build on and significantly develop existing practices, so that operators can demonstrate compliance with RED II sustainability criteria and obtain 2BSvs sustainability certification before the end of 2024. Indeed, with the implementation of the Directive, sustainability certification is essential to secure the waste industry’s access to bioenergy markets in Europe.
Bruno Berken, Director General of 2BS, comments: “We are delighted with this collaboration with FNADE, which will enable us to broaden the scope of our certification and further support the opening up of bioenergy markets for the waste sector. This initiative is a perfect fit with our activities in the bioenergy industry.”
FNADE President Antoine Bousseau added: “Adapting the 2BSvs certification guideline to the specificities of the waste sector enables us to meet the RED II requirements for the entire industry. We are convinced that this collaboration will bring structuring benefits to our members and the sector as a whole, by reinforcing the recognition of bioenergies produced by our French waste management companies.”
The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
