2BSXtra is our sustainability certification dedicated to the food and feed markets
Climate change is driving consumers to choose more environmentally friendly products, a phenomenon that affects all industries. In various sectors, including the food and feed industry, several customers are demanding more ‘sustainable’ products.
For this reason, many players are seeking sustainability certification for their materials to increase the value of their ecological approach.
To meet this demand, 2BS has expanded its reach into the new food and feed markets.
Our 2BSXtra enables players to meet the sustainability needs of their customers through a certification that is easy to implement.
History
Born in 2016, the 2BSXtra certification was intended only for certified 2BSvs operators and was very little known on the market.
During 2024, at the request of stakeholders, we have created an “independent” certification, separate from the world of energy, for all stakeholders in the food and feed sectors, whether or not they are 2BSvs certified.
This was also the opportunity to introduce improvements and additions designed to reinforce the traceability and transparency of raw material and product flows throughout the food & feed supply chain.
Two options for the 2BSXtra certification
- ADD-ON module: extension of classic 2BSvs certification to the food and feed sectors in an optimized combined audit. Detailed documents help auditors verify compliance criteria, including a separate mass balance for food & feed flows, as well as indications on methods for calculating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The documents are enriched with a checklist to facilitate the audit process, providing customers with an overview of the elements audited.
- Version 2 / Stand Alone: a certification decoupled from the energy sector, responding to the food and feed market. It proposes a GHG module, a revised standard and a detailed procedure to clarify compliance criteria.
Who can be certified by 2BSXtra?
2BSXtra is a voluntary certification that does not apply to the regulated EU biofuels market and is independent of the 2BSvs certification. 2BSXtra allows operators to demonstrate the certified “sustainable” origin and traceability of materials intended for human and animal feed, from raw material to final product.
Moreover, 2BSvs certified operators benefit from a simple plugin to implement this certification framework (2BS-ADD-02).
The material to be certified under 2BSXtra is all that can be used for:
- Human food: we refer to any substance or product, whether processed, partially processed or unprocessed, intended for or reasonably expected to allow human ingestion (definition from Regulation (EC) No 178/2002)
- Animal feed: any substance or product, including additives, processed, partially processed or unprocessed, intended to be used as oral feed for animals (definition from Regulation (EC) No 178/2002).
SAI FSA 3.0 Equivalent
This certification is equivalent to SAI FSA 3.0, widely recognized in the food market. Know more on the SAI FSA page.

If you are already 2BSvs-certified, simply connect to your private space and request a new certification.
If you are new to our system, simply start by contacting our team.
Once you have signed a contract with our association and a recognized Certification Body, you can schedule the initial site audit.
Please note: preparation for the certification process can take up to 6 months, given the time required to recover site documentation and production data. However, once certified, 2BSvs certification is valid for 5 years, as long as follow-up audits are carried out annually.
